Chrome memory issues

themagicpen   January 19th, 2010 2:00a.m.

Chrome is my browser of choice for flash intensive stuff, but I'm finding that with Skritter, after a lengthy session (say 30 mins plus) things get very sluggish and I have a chrome.exe process taking up half a gig of memory. It's not a major issue as a simple reload kills the process and you can restart, but perhaps indicates that something wants fixed somewhere?

Same thing over here.

Always good to know it's not only me.

Do people in other browsers see this Flash memory leak? I know it used to be fine but perhaps I've broken something since I was optimizing.

Using opera

I haven't been able to find the leak yet, but I have made one change which should slow down its progression. Please let me know how much of a difference it has made.

Thanks!

Re other browsers - I've noticed Firefox use up to half a gig while using Skritter, but I generally use Firefox for a range of stuff and wouldn't want to point the finger. However I just tried a 'clean' session with Skritter and while I didn't have time to see how high it went, mem usage was creeping up steadily over time.

i'm chrome exclusive and noticed it at first when i took a break from my genius tablet and was using the mouse pad, but when i returned to the tablet use it was still there and felt like the ink was dragging more than ever. i do leave my skritter chrome app open constantly though. i haven't noticed any changes yet.

I've identified the source of the issue--a Flash player bug that my recent and rather limited error detector was running into. I don't have a workaround for the bug, but I've turned the weaksauce error detector off and that should fix the leak.

Note that memory usage will still increase slightly over time as more and more stroke images and sounds are loaded and cached, but it should be very reasonable now (a few dozen megs if you practice a long time).

This will be uploaded some time this afternoon.

Maybe it is not as bad as before, but over here when the memory usage hits around 40 meg things begin to really slow down. So reloading every 20 minutes or so is still my best option.

nick   March 29th, 2010 1:16p.m.

40 megs after 20 minutes is to be expected. It shouldn't cause problems (unless your system has very little RAM to spare), but something else associated with long practicing may be going wrong. Are others seeing this?
